Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was raised by her mother, grandparents and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford became interested in the profession of acting in her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that it was not the right location for her. Ford decided to apply instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured the position she wanted on her third try. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring on Doctor Who. Ford didn't complete her degree until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991, appearing in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. In addition to her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
